One day I was talking to Kade and I saw a flash of white were there shouldn’t be. We took him to the dentist and he said that his teeth would need to be pulled.
I didn’t tell him that when we went back to the dentist that they were going to pull his teeth. I didn’t want him to stress out about it. I did have a talk with him about how he was getting to the age where his teeth were going to start getting loose and were going to fall out so his new big teeth could have a place to grow in. He thought about that for awhile and said, “but mom what if I look funny with a hole.” I told him that he wouldn’t have holes for long because his big teeth were already growing in. I also told him about the tooth fairy coming and taking his teeth and leaving him some money. He was excited about getting to buy something but then he said, “but mom what if I can’t sleep, what if I get cold because the tooth fairy leaves the window open.” I told him that I would let the tooth fairy in the front door and then let her back out. He decided that would be ok.
The dentist said that the roots of his teeth were so long that they would never have gotten loose. He also said that because they were so long he would feel it after the medication they gave him wore off. I didn’t tell him that his teeth were gone for a couple hours after his appointment. When I finally did I just said that while the dentist was fixing his cavity he noticed that his teeth were loose so he just pulled them out. His eyes filled up with tears and then he said he wanted to see. He looked in the mirror and just sat there. Then he said he needed to see again. I showed him how the big tooth was already there to fill up the hole. I told him that he might be sore so we could wait to go miniature golfing another day. He didn’t want to wait so off we went to the miniature golf course. I asked him the next day if he needed some Tylenol for his mouth but he was just fine.
He was still a little bit worried about the tooth fairy when he went to bed that night but Grandma was here for a visit so she slept by him. He was pretty excited about his five dollars the next morning. We took it to Toys R Us and he picked out a stuffed green pig from Angry Birds.
I kept trying to get him to show people his mouth but he was very shy about it. He told me that he was afraid people would laugh at him. Of course no one did but I have to say the first time I saw the holes in his gums it freaked me out a little bit.
After Kade’s teeth came out and before we went golfing we stopped and finally got Jaxson a big boy bed. I didn’t want to get him one because I loved being able to put him in bed and not have to deal with him getting out all night long. I finally caved because he only had about a foot of room left in his crib.
He absolutely loves his bed. We got him some Super Mario Bros bedding so that makes it even better. When he gets up I ask him if he slept good in his new bed and he just bursts into a smile and nods his head. He hasn’t gotten out of bed once during the night or during nap time. In fact when he wakes up in the morning he just sits on his bed until we come to get him.
While we were putting together his bed I decided to take a crack at potty training. I made him a potty chart and when he fills it up we will go back to Lagoon.
It’s happy faces now but we’ll just see how fast that turns.
We have been talking about using the potty for months but he has been pretty adamant that he was not going to do it. I did finally get him to sit on the potty but he will only sit there for about 2 seconds make grunting noises and then say he is all done. I put him in a pull up, they are Buzz and Woody and if you get them wet the Sheriff’s star disappears. I kept telling him not to pee on the star but sure enough he came and said, “mom my star disappeared.” After that I decided since we weren’t going anywhere that we would try just underwear and sweat pants (to soak up the pee before it gets on my carpet). He loves his new underwear so he was excited about it. I thought maybe if he got wet he would want to go in the potty. Three underwear changes later we went back to pull ups.
Now when I change his bum he says, “hurry mom before it pees on me.” Then when I get his diaper on he says, “that was a close one.” I still ask him all day if he wants to pee on the potty and he says, “in a minute, I’m not ready yet.” Maybe we’ll try again later.
