Growing butterflies is something we do every year. First we go on a caterpillar hunt, then they live on our kitchen table and we feed them and clean their aquarium everyday. When they are finally full they turn into a J.
We were lucky enough to see the J wiggling and turning into a chrysalis.
Here is the skin that fell to the ground as the chrysalis formed.
This is Kade’s teacher’s caterpillar house that we used to take one to school. Kade told us a couple days ago that the butterfly hatched and they got to let it go outside.
I missed getting pictures of the fully formed chrysalis and when it turns black so these pictures are from last year.
We woke up this morning and when we checked on the chrysalis we found our butterfly. It hung here most of the day drying it’s wings.
We make some sugar water and feed it before we let it go so Kade can watch the tongue unroll and see it eat.
Kade wanted to feed it this year.
Kade carried it outside and put it on some flowers.
It flew away but we followed it to our neighbor’s tree and then to a field of sunflowers before we finally lost it.
